ZDDP Lives On?

According to a recent article by Tim Sullivan that appeared in the October 1, 2020 issue of Lubes’n’Greases, “Zinc Dialkyl Dithiophosphate (ZDDP) ZDDP Lives On” ZDDP continues to be used in lubricants as one of the oldest anti-wear additives. The article recognizes the significant environmental problems caused by ZDDP while at the same time leaves the reader to believe that there is no option but to carry on with the use of ZDDP. We have to ask, “Is it is in the best interest of the environment that ZDDP continues to “live on” when there has been a viable option for nearly a decade?

BestLine International Research Inc., a Wyoming registered corporation, has spent a great deal of time and money in research and field testing this viable replacement. Approximately 6 years ago, we attempted to have BestLine, reviewed by various research centres in the United States, hoping to have our 3rd party testing done locally. Meeting with delays and opposition, in the end, we settled on the Swiss Polytechnic of Lausanne, Switzerland to run the test program. BestLine was very impressed with the caliber of their test equipment and their research people are highly accredited and internationally recognized for their work in the area of tribology and lubrication.

Following the extensive testing by the Swiss Polytechnic, Dr. Mischler, who headed up the team, asked for permission to submit the resulting paper for peer review and publication. The peer accepted paper was published in the WEAR Journal in 2014. According to their study, the additive pack that BestLine produces resulted in the following; (a) reduction in wear by 94% over the host oil, a top tier synthetic oil and (b) isolated the ZDDP in this same oil, making it completely redundant. The BestLine additive pack reduces friction and wear while at the same time, reducing corrosion and oxidation. Since this paper was published, BestLine has been granted patents specific to the area of ZDDP replacement in countries such as Australia, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa, India, Israel and most recently, Canada, to name but a few.
